Astro vs WordPress: Which One Fits Your Business?
If you’ve talked to a web designer lately, you may have heard the word “Astro” come up. And if you’ve had a website for a while, there’s a good chance it runs on WordPress. So which one should you be on?
Honest answer: it depends on what your website needs to do. Both are solid. They’re just built for different jobs. Here’s a plain-English breakdown to help you figure out which one fits.
How Each One Works

WordPress is a content management system. Your pages, posts, and settings live in a database, and every time someone visits, WordPress pulls that content together and builds the page on the spot. You log into a dashboard to make changes, and you can extend it with plugins to do almost anything: sell products, take donations, run memberships, book appointments.
Astro takes a different approach. It builds all your pages ahead of time into finished, lightweight files. When someone visits, the page is already done and ready to go. There’s no database, no dashboard, and no plugins running in the background.
Think of it like a restaurant. WordPress cooks each meal to order, which is great when every customer wants something different. Astro has the meal plated and waiting, which is hard to beat when the menu doesn’t change much.
Side by Side
| Astro | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Extremely fast out of the box | Can be fast with good hosting and tuning |
| Security | Very little to attack, no login or database | Secure when kept updated, but needs regular care |
| Maintenance | Almost none | Ongoing core, theme, and plugin updates |
| Editing | Changes usually go through your web designer | Edit anything yourself from the dashboard |
| Features | Contact forms, newsletter signups, basic content | Nearly unlimited through plugins |
| Best for | Brochure sites and lead generation | Stores, donations, memberships, frequent publishing |
When Astro Makes Sense
Astro is a great fit if your website is mainly there to tell people who you are, what you do, and how to reach you. A home page, a services page, an about page, a contact form, maybe a newsletter signup. That describes a lot of small businesses here in Colorado Springs: contractors, consultants, rental companies, local service providers.
If you rarely touch your site and just want it to load fast, rank well, and stop needing updates, Astro takes a lot off your plate.
When WordPress Makes Sense
WordPress shines when your site needs to do things. If you’re selling products online, taking donations, processing payments, running a member area, or publishing new content every week with several people on your team, WordPress gives you the tools and the flexibility to handle it. It’s also a good pick if you want to log in and make changes yourself without calling anyone.
A Few Questions to Ask Yourself
Do you need to take money on your website? How often do you update your content, and who does it? Is your site mostly a digital business card, or is it a working part of your operations? Are you tired of plugin updates and security warnings?
Your answers will usually point pretty clearly in one direction.
